Artist's Statement:
My work is always a subjective exploration of an environment in symbolic terms. For example, water could be interpreted to suggest the unconscious mind.
In my current body of work, the setting is Green Springs Park, which is 36 acres of natural Florida hammock surrounding a beautiful sulfur spring, which is 10 minutes from my studio. In my weekly visit to the spring I take photos, returning to the studio to zoom in on details with my tablet. From this I find the focus of my compositions, which are paintings ranging from 12" square to 48"x 36" vertical canvases. Because of this format I do not intend them to be traditional landscape paintings, but rather a composition to solve in terms of balance, contrast, variety, harmony, unity, etc. Above and beyond these formal concerns, with the Green Springs paintings I am expressing my awe and concern for the fragility of the natural environment.
My work prior to the Green Springs series has always addressed these concerns: ideas from the environment and my relationship with it, suggesting a semi-dream state that is often evoked as I put the painting together.
My intention is to present myself with a problem to be solved through creating a painting. My hope is to inspire others to look for depth and resonance in their own work and in their own lives.
